The 5th of MayPosted: May 5, 2010
Back in 1912, Hellmann’s mayonnaise was made in England from where the Titanic collected 12,000 jars for delivery in Vera Cruz after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But the ship hit an iceberg and sank, with the cargo forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy … about mayonnaise, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning. It occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo. 🙂
Thanks to Linda Escobar for the above info! But seriously, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla between Mexican forces and the French (who eventually won the war) led by, Tejano- born, General Ignacio Zaragoza. It is important to remind everyone that Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence day! Which is on September 16 (El Dies y Seis de Septiembre)! Have a great day and Happy Birthday Mijo!
