ELSA — A lone Edcouch-Elsa High School flag was attached to the inner lining of Benigno “Benny” Layton’s casket.

As it was opened at a public viewing Tuesday night, the late Edcouch-Elsa school board president’s family filled the Robert Capello Gym with sobs, his daughter screaming for “daddy.”

“Benny was a gifted person,” brother Tony Layton said of the 60-year-old Elsa Municipal Court Judge who died Saturday in a motorcycle accident near San Antonio. “Benny was giving to us all the time.”

“He loved music, he loved the family and above all he loved you, Edcouch-Elsa,” he continued. “He was so proud of his roots, of where he was from.”
