Latin Notes: Saluté anniversary a bittersweet event

Azeneth Dominguez’s crowning achievement — Saluté’s 25th anniversary — is admittedly bittersweet.

As the bar owner and loyal patrons celebrate at the St. Mary’s Strip landmark this weekend with Flaco JimenezMax Baca, the West Side Horns, Joe Jama and Los Dudes, it’s with a sinking feeling that things didn’t play out quite the way they’d hoped.

Busy 2012 for TexManiacs

Max Baca still has miles to go.

The leader of the Grammy-winning Los TexManiacs says 2012 is shaping up to be a great year for the conjunto rock ‘n’ rollers with upcoming gigs in China, a series of dates with Los Lobos (including a Fiesta stint) and a new Smithsonian Folkways album, “Texas Towns & Tex-Mex Sounds.”

New Mexico Vs. Tejas

This writer believes that Tejanos hate Hispanos (from New Mexico) and vice versa.  I think they probably do hate Tejanos, but we don’t give them hardly any thought.  I think most Tejanos would not even flinch if someone said they were from New Mexico.  Although the same probably could not be said about a New Mexican (except for most retailers, who love to have Tejano tourists!) I think New Mexico is pretty cool, lot a culture, etc.  Don’t HATE my big ‘ol STATE!  Isn’t Max Baca from New Mexico? So it can’t be all bad! lol
